Dieting As a Family

There’s an old saying that when Mama’s not happy, nobody’s happy. Yet dieting and weight loss is often something many mothers do independently of their families. Everyone else eats as they please and does as they please, and mom suffers alone with her celery and rice cakes. I’ve found that in my personal and counseling experience, this doesn’t work well at all. It is one of the main reasons people regain the weight after their diet is over. The diet is done in a social vacuum. It’s like a phase that comes and goes.

Part of the problem is because of how society views overweightness, obesity, and fitness. The definition of fitness is, for most people, slim. So if someone in one’s family is overweight, then it’s perceived as if they are the one with the problem, and everybody else is fine. Nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, it could well be that the other slim people in the family are psychologically projecting their fat onto one person (often the mother or one of the children). It sounds weird, but hear me out.

Let’s change the frame for a moment, to a different dietary problem. Let’s just say that one person in the family has a severe wheat allergy or gluten intolerance. They need to be on a special diet, and can’t be exposed to anything with gluten in it at all. What if everybody else in the house was so inconsiderate that they would bring wheat bread and pasta into the kitchen, and leave crumbs everywhere?

When the expected trip to the emergency room happened, who would really be to blame in that scenario? Would you blame the allergic person for not knowing there were bits of gluten laying around that they could inhale or ingest?

A person doesn’t become obese overnight. Everybody who lives with them is part of the reason they became that way either by enabling, ignorance, or sabotaging their efforts. 99 times out of 100, they are also not the only person in the family who is actually unhealthy. They’re just the one whose unhealthiness manifested as obesity. A good proportion of the time, they’re also not the only one in the family who is fat, just the one whose fat seems most socially damaging.

So when Mom needs to go on a diet, what it really means is that the whole family needs to overhaul their diet so they’re no longer facilitating unhealthiness in any of the family members. To some degree, it means that if Mom is the primary cook and nutrition handler of the family, it’s her job to get everybody on the ball in that regard. Dad’s department can be exercise. That’s a nice balance. Duties can be assigned based on capabilities regardless of gender, but the point is that it’s everybody in the family’s job to help maintain the family’s health. When it’s time to get fit, it’s time for everybody, not just the fat one(s).

This is one reason I like the natural or “real food diet”. It’s more of a nutrition strategy than what people are used to calling a “diet”. Plus, it’s livable for everyone in a family. You simply stick to natural foods and cooking things from scratch according to tried and true old fashioned methods. There is no junk food in the house, and if you want sweets, you have to make them from scratch using ingredients as close to nature as feasable.

It’s a diet the whole family benefits from regardless of their weight. Those who are overweight lose their extra fat, and those who are slim no longer have to struggle to maintain that. Nobody feels deprived or left out. The family is talking about food and where it comes from, appreciating what they have, and having fun.

It’s not a quick fix, and there will probably be lapses. The kids might spend a little of their allowance on a candy bar or something. It won’t however, be the end of the world to have an occasional fish and chips outside. Besides, there’s nothing like real food, and once you get going, you won’t like the taste of the fake food anymore. You’ll consider deep frying fish or potatoes in an over processed vegetable oil, an insult to sea and plant life.

Because food is such a basic need, when you start eating natural food, you also start to have a more natural family. Feeding each other well is treating each other well.

Fat Burning Weight Loss is Best for Fast Results

Posted by Kane on 12 31st, 2009 | No Comments

Choosing a fat burning weight loss program is best if you want to lose weight fast without risking your health.  Most popular diet plans put you on a restrictive calorie plan, which does nothing to increase metabolism.  If you really want to lose weight without feeling deprived, choose a weight loss plan that teaches you how to burn fat!

Many people don’t realize that the fastest way to lose weight is by using REAL foods, not special diet meals.  The kinds of diets we are used to seeing are expensive, because you must buy special meals and sometimes supplements.  These diets don’t work over the long haul!  Fat burning weight loss is best if you want to lose weight safely and keep it off.

We have all been trained to think that if you want to lose weight, you have to drastically cut calories and exercise like a madman.  This is NOT true at all.  It’s simple to lose weight fast if you learn what foods are good fat burners, and how to use them to be most effective.

Fat burning weight loss happens when you eat certain foods in a combination that increase your metabolism.  Some of these foods include lean protein, dairy, fruits and vegetables, nuts and green tea just to name a few.  You truly do not have to eat low calorie or low fat foods to lose weight rapidly.

People do not realize how easy it really is to lose weight when you know how to do it the right way.  You do not have to count calories or limit food portions to drop pounds quickly!  That’s the amazing thing – most people think you have to starve to lose fat and inches.  What a crock!

You can easily lose 15 to 20 pounds per month and never count a calorie or feel hungry.  Isn’t that amazing?  And you thought the only way you could achieve this goal is by starvation diets, dangerous diet pills or fasting.  By choosing a fat burning weight loss program, you can get rid of the fat and keep it off!

Breakfast: How is it related to Child’s Learning?

Posted by Kane on 12 31st, 2009 | No Comments

Breakfast is considered to be the most important meal of the day. Every mother asks her child to have a healthy breakfast.  A nutritious breakfast is a great way to start the day. Why so much emphasis on breakfast? Read on to find yourself.

Children, generally, sleep early. When they get up the next morning, their body needs to get sufficient nutrition to break fee from the long hours of fast. A nutritional breakfast not only gives strength to the body, it also energizes the brain of children. An alert brain, in turn, would allow your child to be attentive in class, and understand the concepts taught by the school teacher.

Studies have shown that children who skip breakfast tend to show low self-confidence, lack of concentration, and laziness. Attention span of kids who don’t eat their breakfast also reduces considerably over a period of time. Irritability (mood swings) and restlessness are also some of the immediate consequences of a skipping breakfast.

It might surprise you but not having breakfast is a major cause of obesity. How? When a child does not eat his breakfast, he starts feeling hungry during the day. As a result of this, he might overeat. Overeating might also involve consumption of calorie-rich food, especially junk food. This can directly result in weight gain, and hence, obesity.

Breakfast is important for keeping the metabolism in right working condition. Now that you know that breakfast is vital for your child’s health, and growth, we must also talk about the right kind of breakfast. Many people believe that a nutritious breakfast is often expensive. This is however far from being true.

Nutritional Breakfast

Fresh fruit juice is one of best things that should be an essential part of your child’s breakfast. Fruits can also be included. In fact, fruits are better than fruit juice as they also contain a lot of fiber. Whole grains and milk should also be included in the breakfast. Items rich in fat should be avoided. For example, butter and high-fat cheese would not provide healthy fat to children. A balanced breakfast should be rich in protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, calcium, minerals.

Working parents have a little difficulty finding time to cook their children a healthy breakfast. This can be taken care of by following the tips mentioned below.

Don’ts

Avoid serving food that has lot of sugar in it. Pastry, cakes, muffins, and jam are some of the things that should be kept away. Try to avoid a lot of processed items in the breakfast. Whole grains are always better. Brown bread should be preferred over white bread.

Parents should make it a point to include breakfast in their routine so that their children also follow the same. Remember, a healthy breakfast will keep your child active and strong. Serve your child a nutritious breakfast and see him excel at studies and sports!

The Good, The Bad, The Sugars

Posted by Kane on 12 30th, 2009 | No Comments

Much has been cited about the medical dangers of excess blood sugar. Diabetes has become so prevalent that it approaches an epidemic. It is also known that people can’t function properly without a base level and sufficient reserve of blood sugar. To help provide clarity, I interviewed food coach Jean Wright to assist you in enjoying life’s sweetness without the unpleasant after effects. Here are ten facts about sugar and suggestions for a healthy balanced approach to it.

The Good:

All sugars are processed by your body into the base compound glucose. This fuels all of your body’s cells for proper function.

Complex sugars (whole grains or vegetables) are a natural source of sugar that is slowly processed by your body and provide sustained, longer term energy output.

Simple sugars (granulated table variety) are refined and processed so that your body absorbs them quickly, allowing you an immediate energy source (and buzz).

The Bad:

Simple sugars (granulated, i.e. baked goods and high-fructose corn syrup, i.e. syrups and sodas) are rapidly depleted, resulting in a sharp drop in your energy. Plan to eat protein and grains 3-4 hours before stressful or high energy events.

Your body’s processing of simple sugars results in an absence of nutrition and causes you to become dehydrated. Drink pure fruit juices, add more water to your thirst quenching procedures and eat bananas and colorful fruits.

“Fat Free” does not also mean sugar free. “Sugar Free” does not also mean fat free. When you shop for dietary replacements, remember to read the labels to be clear as to what you are buying and determine how much of it you plan to eat. Many diet programs emphasize portion control as the key to success. Start with less.

Excess blood sugar is stored as fat. This can lead to obesity and blood pressure issues. Gradual scaling back on your sugar intake can be as dramatic as any other action to lose weight. You can pair this with exercises that result in a sustained increase in your heart rate. Over time you may improve your metabolism of fats.

Artificial sweeteners are chemical compounds that contain many components with questionable health effects. They are so much sweeter than sugar and proportionally expensive. Natural sweeteners such as unprocessed honey and 100% pure maple syrup may be safer and are nutritious.

Sugar can be a suspect if you experience an increase in mood swings, suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, and/or notice frequent yeast infections after sustained high sugar intake. Your brain chemistry and immune system can be “uplifted” by exercises that release your own “feel good” hormone (endorphins) and stress reducing activities (creativity, meditation, yoga).

What I Do:

10) I seek to selectively combine the goods and the bads. During the day, I do more physical activity in the morning, eat moderate portions at meals, and consume nuts and dried fruit as a daytime snack. After sunset, the sugar hound comes out; I eat premium ice cream, but then do a series of yoga stretches before bed. My mind is relaxed and my body becomes unwound. This makes my day!

Dr. Howie Shareff (http://youcallthisyoga.com) has been passionate about relationships in his career, family, and community. These relationships supplied him with perspectives on thousands of people’s health habits. He found that emotional stress and physical strain were tolerated but not addressed. These problems, combined with his own issues ( physical challenges from treating patients, recreational sports, and arthritis), led Dr. Shareff to create a beginner’s yoga DVD. The goal was to provide a program that allows anyone to practice yoga anywhere, anytime.

New title: Natural Vegetarian Protein Source for those Vegans

Posted by Kane on 12 30th, 2009 | No Comments

If you are one who relish on non-veg foods, then it’s easy for you to easily get that quota of important nutrients including the essential proteins. Vegans need not get disheartened. The vegetarian food items are also rich in proteins if you can choose them well and include them in your daily meals. However, it’s important to remember that mere taking vegetarian foods won’t build those sinews and muscles unless you get yourself enrolled into a exercise or fitness session. So, if you are one among those for whom that muscular lean look matters the most, you need to do exercise besides taking proteins regularly. Be it the non-veg or vegetarian protein source, whatever you take, ensure it works for you, the way you want.

The market is now full of protein supplements which are made either from milk, egg or soy. If you are a vegan you can consider consuming those protein supplements which are made from soy. If you are more into considering the natural sources, then also you have a number of choices. Beans, lentils and legumes are one of the richest sources of proteins. As a vegetarian protein source, black beans, kidney beans, chili, split pea and chickpea hummus also do wonder.

Those who have a special liking for a natural vegetarian protein source, they can also consider including nuts, seeds and nut butter in their regular diet. Almonds and walnuts are very good sources if you want easy results. You can also go for soy nut butter or cashew nut butter. If you are one who can’t resist on gulping those fast foods, they can have a veggie burger as a meat substitute. Among other rich natural protein items, mention may especially be made of oatmeal, bagel, slices of whole wheat bread, milk, baked beans, tofu, cooked broccoli, whole wheat toast, yogurt, quinoa, rye, wheat germ, wheat, wild rice, banana, cantaloupe, pineapple, strawberry, tangerine, watermelon, grape, grapefruit, honeydew melon, orange, papaya, peach, pear etc.

Getting into the shape is not just an easy task. But you can make it easier if you stick to a strict diet and exercise plan. And when it comes to diets, taking protein is just too important.
